Remember that secret Wu Tang album, Once Upon A Time in Shaolin? The one worth millions, because only one single copy was produced? Online art auction house Paddle8 recently confirmed the sale of the album to a private American collector, who paid “in the millions” for the exclusive Wu Tang Clan album.

The record took 6 years to produce, with most of the production taking place in Marrakech, Morocco. The group chose an unusual strategy to launch the product, which boils down to wanting to return the value of music back to other types of fine art, as music value has been lowered by streaming and piracy. “For art to change the way people think, it has to come from an extreme place,” said RZA. “No monumental change ever started with a compromise or a small shift. It starts extreme.”

Don’t get your hopes up though – due to copyright, the buyer of the album will not be allowed to release the music for public consumption for another 88 years. It is possible, however, that the group will allow the buyer to take the album on a kind of tour, “making it available for listening in carefully-secured ticketed exhibits at museums and art galleries.”
