It’s been a big week in 1960’s art sales, big as in breaking-the-$100-million big. It all started with “Three Studies of Lucian Freud” by Francais Bacon being sold for $142.2 million earlier in the week, and following it up was the sale of “Silver Car Crash” by Pop Art legend, Andy Warhol at Sotheby’s Contemporary Art Auction on Wednesday night.

The artwork is known as one of Warhol’s more sinister and somewhat gruesome pieces, as it involves the imagery of a body amidst the wreckage of a devastating car crash. “Silver Car Crash” is one of four double-paneled car crash paintings that Warhol created throughout the 60’s, and is the only one left outside of a museum. The infamous artwork sold on Wednesday night for a price of $104.5 million, making it the highest price ever paid for Warhol artwork to date.

The estimated price for the piece was between $60 and $80 million, so the final sale price came as a welcomed surprise to sellers within the art community. Both of these high-priced art sales throughout the week seem to suggest a surge in interest amongst the richest of the rich to don their walls with some high profile décor.
