Marble has always been associated with opulence and grandeur and while the material’s texture has permeated pretty much every surface/product/design of late (and yes, we are guilty of this), it doesn’t seem to diminish its aesthetics. IRL, marble is more commonly found in your family kitchen/bathroom/foyer but Sydney artist Alex Seton has been using it to create some mind-blowing works. With a knack for manipulating it with the highest precision, Seton’s somehow makes the marble look like plastic, paper, even soft jersey fabric, as he recreates common objects with this traditional material. Take a look at some of his previous work in our gallery above and if you’re in Sydney right now, make sure to check out his current exhibition, ‘Refoulement’, on display at Sullivan + Strumpf gallery until October 11.
