Melbourne-based artist, Stephen Ives, opens his latest exhibition, JET, at Backwoods Gallery this week. We caught up with Stephen to get the lowdown on the show, chopping up dolls and mailing lists….

My name is…
Stephen Ives

But I’m also known as…Stef

My latest exhibition is called… JET

And it is about… yeah tricky one…. basically a non linear exploration of a pseudo cherub like character (Jet Baby) and the answers and possible questions they imply…. see, easier to pass on that one.

Some things that influenced this series are… an excess of dolls, not thinking too much, crawling around in my subconscious.

An album I listened to a stack when making the works was… a series of DJ sets by James Cooper, Nicolas Jaar, The Dirty Projectors ‘Bitte Orca’

The time of day I’m most likely to make art is…best times between 9 and 11 and 2.30 and 6, but most of my inspiration occurs before dawn anywhere from 3.30 to 7.

The hardest part of putting this show together was…the gallery mailing list, the rest of it was easy.

First thing I do when I get up in the morning is…yoga bandhas and a cup of kombucha (yeah I know nauseatingly healthy)

Some other artists I have been enjoying the work of are…Heinrich Kley…. actually I try to avoid artists.

What I’m working on at the moment is…a sliced in half baby doll.

My favourite colour is…it used to be blue, but green is kind of attractive now, but i tend to wear a lot of brown suits, oh I like orange too…

If I wasn’t doing what I’m doing, I’d be…dead or doing special effects for movies…. I quite like the idea of being a dancer or acrobat but I’m a bit old for all that now, although my handstand is pretty good.

The last website I visited was…my Gmail probably.

My favourite youtube vid is…

Tomorrow I will be…pondering who wrote these questions… oh alright in the studio chopping up baby dolls.
