We caught up with artist Taylor White in light of her upcoming exhibition Base Nature at Just Another Project Space next Thursday night. Ms White enlightened us on all things arty as well as sharing her love for the odd Ke$sha Star Wars music video spoof – Check it below.
My name is…Taylor White
But I’m also known as…Taylor White
My latest exhibition is called… ‘Base Nature’
And it is about… the idea that an identity is merely the echo formation made up of past consciousness and future expectation, and that our attachment to identity is fundamentally linked to the suffering we endure and that which we inflict on others. The ‘self’ as a concept which we experience through its vulnerability.
Some things that influenced this series are… two years’ worth of personal experience and spiritual exploration. Bears, brambles, locusts and bees; synesthetic manifestations of spiritual conflict.
An album I listened to a stack when making the works was… a couple of things… original mixes by Sophia Sin, which were created in conjunction with my own work and will be included in this coming exhibition; and anything that’s been touched by Flume.
The time of day I’m most likely to make art is… i’ll go into the studio around noon and work to the point of physical failure; but my best ideas usually come out around 10pm.
The hardest part of putting this show together was… staying focused, maintaining the rawness necessary to let the ideas flow.
First thing I do when I get up in the morning is… pee.
Some other artists I have been enjoying the work of are… not too long ago a couple of DMV artists stayed at the studio where I work; I had the privilege of watching Blo and Jaw put up a mural here in Fitzroy that just blew my shit. Also lately I’ve developed a bit of a crush on the fine pencil work of Marco Mazzoni.
What I’m working on at the moment is… painting for ‘Base Nature.’
My favourite colour is… clear.
If I wasn’t doing what I’m doing, I’d be… a mad wanderer.

Tomorrow I will be… mixing up my routine by spending the day in studio.
