So there’s speculation that the 15-metre tall giant rubber duck that was floating off a port in Taiwan was attacked by jealous eagles and has deflated, causing widespread disappointment to giant rubber ducky fans before it even made it to the NYE countdown. The competing theory is that the duck just succumbed to the weather conditions. Welcome to the wonders of the 21st century.

Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman is well known for his large-scale rubber ducks, a project in which he aims to evoke childhood memories by dotting the massive floating installations all around the world. This unfortunate duck had only been in Taiwan for 11 days before its downfall, and was set to bring in the new year in the city of Keelung. An investigation into what actually went down is still underway.

Some really underwhelming footage of the duck deflating was captured by someone at the scene. Check it out.
