His latest project, Kaze Tachinu (The Wind Rises), is currently competing in the Venice Film Festival, but his rep has just announced director Hayao Miyazaki’s intention to retire, making this film his last.

This will be sad news to many, as the guru of Japanese animated features has been involved in the industry for 50 years and produced some of the genre’s highest regarded works. You may be familiar with popular titles such as Ponyo, My Neighbour Totoro and the Oscar-winning epic Spirited Away.

According to Studio Ghibli, Miyazaki will hold a press conference addressing the announcement, next week, with studio exec Kouji Hoshino saying “He sincerely wants to say goodbye to everyone.” The press conference is slated to occur in Tokyo on Friday.
