Legendary writer, STAYHIGH149, passed away yesterday, aged 61. His glymph of the Smoker became one of the most recognisable NYC motifs, a hugely influential style that was adored by all. After over two decades out of the game, STAYHIGH was swamped by hundreds of fans at a public appearance in 2000. Following, the artist came out of retirement, getting his work back up and reaching out to a new generation of admirers, and reconnecting with his old fans.
As an icon of graffiti culture, STAYHIGH will influence writers and their styles for years to come, with Revok paying homage to the writer on his blog:
STAYHIGH’s status as in icon in the writing world was cemented by 1974 when The Faith of Graffiti was published. STAYHIGH, perhaps more then any other writer truly is The Faith of Graffiti.
