A trailer has been released this week for A Silent Shout: The Nicky Winmar Story, a new documentary from filmmaker and long-time friend of Winmar, Tim O’Brien.

The film marks 20 years since AFL footballer Nicky Winmar made a now-famous gesture in a moment of defiance, lifting his jumper to point at his skin and declare “I’m black and I’m proud to be black,” in response to racist taunts.

The film explores this moment and how two decades on, racism still pervades sporting culture, as shown by the incident where abuse was directed at AFL player Adam Goodes by a teenage crowd member earlier this year. O’Brien speaks to football players, fans, photographers, and aboriginal rights activists to look at how racism exists in broader Australian culture too, as well as the nation’s relationship with indigenous culture.
