Joy Divison’s debut album ‘Unknown Pleasures’ was unprecedented when it was first released in ’79. It marked a departure from everything that had preceded it, and a definitive step forward into uncharted territory. It was fitting that the album art too should become iconic in its own right. The original pressing of the album carried the monochromatic design – a visual representation of the first ever detected pulsar – on the front with no additional track-listing or text. It became emblematic of the new wave of music, and it wasn’t long until tributes and reinterpretations of the design solidified its place in the canon of pop culture. Watch Peter Saville, the graphic designer credited with the iconic artwork, explain the origins of the cover design and muse on its subsequent notoriety.
