There are a couple of great films that are about to start showing here in Melbourne at ACMI both of which if you haven't seen... Well then you really need to.
Starting tonight with a short run until Sunday the 5th of July is 2008's Beautiful Losers which follows the growth of the DIY art ethic inspired by the surf, skate, graffiti and music scenes of N.Y. and L.A. It's a great look at how contemporary youth culture and art have come to permeate our lives and how they've become businesses unto themselves. There are a lot of notable names in this film (Think Steve Powers Aka ESPO, Geoff McFetridge etc) and the insight provided into their creative lives is both as interesting as it is inspiring. Get all the details here.
The second film is the seminal graffiti and hip-hop film Style Wars. Filmed during the 80's by Tony Silver with production help from Henry Chalfant. The film documents the exploits of some of the scenes early pioneers. You've more then likely already seen this film I'm assuming but if you haven't well this is your chance and if you have well now you can catch it on a screen bigger than the one you had in that crappy sharehouse in early 2000. Style Wars doesn't start till the 9th and plays till the 12th of July. Get all the details here.
