Jeremy Fish

A Different Perspective

"I try to put symbols and characters together in a way that invites people in to the story to tell their own ending" Jeremy Fish
Interview By Chris Delaney
Jeremy Fish is a man who isn't wasting anybody's time. When he's not running skateboard companies and setting up online stores to benefit his fellow artists, he's also known for working very hard on developing a style that's a mix between the real and the very surreal.
When did you realise that art was what you wanted to do?

After high school my mom was really pushing me to go to college. Art was the only thing I was ever any good at, so I went to art school. It really is one of the only things I have been pretty good at my whole life.

When did you realise that art was what you could do, career wise?

I took alot of screenprinting in school. I had a lot of jobs screenprinting at that point and I knew I could use it to help make a living as an artist. I got a good job in the skateboard industry through a good friend right out of art school, so I guess I realized it the first day at that job.

What's your background, education wise?

I have an associates and a bachelors degree in fine arts. I graduated from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1998. Its a great school with an illustrious history. Picasso used to teach there, Ansel Adams set up the photo department and Diego Rivera painted a mural there. Barry Mcgee graduated right before I started there. Art school is goofy, but I am proud of that place and I learned a lot, but I'll be paying back my loans until I drop dead, I think.

Was your art encouraged at home?

Sort of. It was more like be handy and crafty than it was really about making art. My mother and my sister and my moms parents are all very good at handy crafts, so it was all around me as a kid.

Where do you find the themes and the subjects that you paint?

Day to day life. Telling simple stories with symbols, animals, and characters.

What is it about what you do that you think people enjoy the most?

Storytelling, I hope. I think I try to put symbols and characters together in a way that invites people in to the story to tell their own ending. I hope people see little bits of the drawings and it reminds them of someone or something inviting them into the story.

What is it about what you do that you enjoy the most?

Drawing is my favourite way to pass time. Pen and paper. No boss, no employees, just me.

You've released a solo book, a collab with Aesop Rock, several pairs of shoes, including one with Nike, you've done a room at Hotel Des Arts, you've run a skateboard company AND helped launch an online store. What else is there to do?

Animation, music videos, short films, album covers, giant bronze and marble statues, sex toys, halloween costumes, trips to exotic new places, and probably some other shit too. Life is short, get busy living or go take a permanent nap.

When do you think you'll be back in Australia?

I've never been. Will someone invite me over, and we will party?

To see more of Mr Fish's tripped out work head over to sillypinkbunnies and try and guess what he's on.
