The day that emoji finally trumps our reliance on – gross – words is getting closer. The Unicode Consortium (basically the overlords of all the characters that appear on the internet) have blessed the world with about 250 new emojis.

Before you go hunting through your phone for new emojis, just be aware that we now have to wait for phone operating systems like iOS and Android to catch up and implement them on your favourite device.

So just bear in the mind that it’s now up to the likes of Apple and Google to decide whether or the middle-finger emoji is coming your way.

In the meantime, take a look at some of the new symbols in the gallery above. (At last an outlet for all the chipmunk-based communication that I’ve had pent up!) The images above are not representative of how they will look on your phone, but they should give you an idea.
