15 minute fad or way of the future? That’s the question Jezebel and Wall Street Journal are posing in their articles, each regarding “Emojis” and “Stickers” becoming the future of communication. On the positive, an emoji really is worth a thousand words when it comes to accurately expressing how you feel. Hungover? Needing a cocktail? Deliriously in love? Too cool for school? Boom, see below..

k-bigpicIt minimises a three-page SMS into a digestible update without losing anything in translation, as texts conveying irony, sarcasm, humour can be misread. It also crashes down language barriers allowing people who don’t speak the same language to communicate. Not. Ok, maybe that’s taking it a bit too far. On the negative, there is nothing more annoying than having to translate an entire message constructed of emojis – nothing screams “Douchebag!” more-so.

What about the closing of book stores, publishing industry suffering, loss of grammatical skills and a declining vocabulary? All which will cause mountains to crumble and send the human race back into the pre-historic era. Using emojis for the odd message is hardly stuff that makes empire’s crumble, nor will it eradicate verbal and written communication when it comes to self expression. It makes communicating slightly easier for those time-pressed moments and messages more visually appealing, but we assume this latest fad will fade as fast as it came. Hopefully.
