In an announcement that might reflect a cynical desire to squeeze any profitability and broad entertainment value out of a franchise that gained a following for its lack of popularity and obtuse humour, Arrested Development is rumoured to be coming back.

That’s right, Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos is reportedly “positive” that Arrested Development will enter its second Netflix season and fifth season overall.
Okay, so at least Sarandos recognises that scheduling issues meant the fourth season felt sparse and show creator Mitch Hurwitz is still interested in continuing the series so there may be a little soul left in the banana stand.

But with actors that seemed visibly disillusioned with the direction of last season, it’s hard not to predict a viral marketing campaign of wacky props (ostriches, amirite?), overplayed cameos and preview trailers of characters stripped to their broadest narcissistic traits.

Maybe I’m just being dramatic and Arrested Development will continue being a quality show that will in no way become steadily less funny as each subsequent post-cancellation season erodes the qualities of what made the show good in the first place. You know, like what happened to Scrubs, Family Guy, Pushing Daisies, Beavis and Butthead, Entourage, Community and Futurama.
