Despite having a very catchy hit with the refrain “Who run the world? Girls!”, Beyoncé is appalled at how women are treated in the workforce in comparison to men.  Fuelled by the statistic that “42 million women in the USA are either living in poverty or are on the brink of living in poverty,” Beyoncé wrote an open essay about her feelings towards this, claiming gender equality is so far a myth.

She encourages women in the workforce to demand higher pay packets – equal to men. “…commensurate with their qualifications and not their gender”. But she adds that unless men step in with the same perspective and fight for women too, things will not change.

“Equality will be achieved when men and women are granted equal pay and equal respect […] We have to teach our girls that they can reach as high as humanly possible.”
