South Australia will be the first state in Australia to allow on-road testing of driverless cars, after new legislation was passed through state government overnight.

The state government is attempting to help local technology manufacturers as well as big international clients like Google X, Volvo, and Bosch by allowing testing on real roads. Transport Minister Stephen Mullighan said, “We are taking this out to car companies and also to technology companies making it clear that we’re encouraging them to have presence here in South Australia.”

Currently the testing of driverless cars is only permitted on tracks and closed public roads, but the legislation would allow companies to test their technology or real roads, provided that a detailed plan of their test is submitted beforehand.

If testing does go ahead we may see autonomous vehicles come to our consumer market even sooner than expected, I’m just happy with anything that helps me get home faster.
