Artist Pete Ashton created these images by posting a photo on Instagram, taking a screenshot of that image, and then re-posting it to Instagram over and over. Although the change in quality is not obvious to begin with, after about 25 posts the effect becomes evident.

Ashton was inspired by Alvin Lucier’s 1969 performance artwork, I Am Sitting In A Room, where he recorded himself reading a text then played it back in a different room and recorded that. He then played the new recording back in the room and recorded it again and repeated the process a number of times. The idea was that after a certain point, resonant harmonies and tones of the room itself would render the original words unintelligible.

In Ashton’s project he sought to find the visual artefacts left after the Instagram re-posting process. He describes the digital process involving Instagram and the iPhone as converting images into different formats and their optimisation for fast view in the app.
