As a mid-twenties member of Generation Y who went to Art School to study creative writing, I’m obviously obsessed with Bret Easton Ellis. I mean, that’s par for the course – how could I not be? The dude reached instant classic status with Less Than Zero, a novel he smashed out when he was 21 and still studying. From there he reached unassailable heights, cementing his place in the pop culture canon with each release. The opening sentence of Rules of Attraction? FORGET ABOUT IT. That meta shit in Lunar Park where it’s Bret Easton Ellis writing about a character called Bret Easton Ellis in a Bret Easton Ellis universe? BITCH PLEASE. I finished that book and I got chills, and I’m legitimately emotionally dead.

So when word got out that Ellis was working on a screenplay for Kanye based on his Yeezus album, it was impossible not to pop a raging literary-boner. It pretty much doesn’t matter what comes of it, I’m gonna love it. If it’s successful, it’ll be another cultural triumph. if it’s a Canyonsesque disaster, it’ll be a telling insight into what happens when you give two egomaniacs with unlimited resources free reign on an artistic project – AND I’M STILL GOING TO FUCKING LOVE IT.

With that in mind – we have what’s alleged to be a page from the screenplay, as annotated by Yeezus himself. Is it the real deal? Probably not, I mean the ‘notes’ are too pitch-perfectly self involved – and I’m pretty sure Ellis knows the difference between “its” and “it’s”. But the point is that this is a project that is happening, and that’s reason enough to be excited. I mean, just take a look at this essay Ellis penned in 2011 about the nature of celebrity and tell me that he doesn’t understand Kanye.
