Melbourne’s own Ronny Chieng has been named as a new correspondent for The Daily Show, when Trevor Noah takes the helm from Jon Stewart. Malaysian-born Chieng won best newcomer at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival in 2012 and has experienced a meteoric rise since then. The former University of Melbourne student completed a degree in commercial law, but won the annual campus comedy competition in his fifth year and pursued comedy instead–in light of this, probably a great call.

Due his recent success he’s had to cancel some stand-up dates in the country. The Age reports that ticket holders will receive refunds for cancelled shows in Perth (October 9), Darwin (October 16), Geelong (October 22), Bendigo (October 23), Newcastle (October 31) and Brisbane (November 7). Luckily, he’ll still be performing in Canberra (October 29), Chatswood (October 30) and Sydney’s Enmore Theatre (November 19, rescheduled from September 25). Get a taste for what he’ll be bringing and check out some of his best bits in the gallery above.
