When all those fake memes started circulating a few years ago claiming that ‘today is the future’ with the fake DeLorean dash, most of us knew it was bullshit, but were still secretly excited because the future we had first been promised way back in 1989 was  finally actually just around the corner.

Sure flying cars, hoverboards, and the Mr. Fusion Home Energy Reactor that could take ordinary garbage and easily convert it into the 1.21 jigawatts required to power the DeLorean’s flux capacitor are all likely to be even further into the future, but games where you don’t need hands (Xbox Kinect), 80s retro chic and certain other technological advancements seemed completely doable.

So when Nike revealed that they’d be releasing the Nike MAG sneaker a full four years early, even though it was only 1500 pairs, most of us flipped. We didn’t really expect the power laces to actually work, but when Nike design superstar Tinker Hatfield (dressed as a lowly Nike salesman) explained to Doc Brown in the commercial that the power laces would be ready by 2015, we dared to dream just a little that maybe it wasn’t just a funny joke.

Late last week at the Jordan Brand Flight Lab in New Orleans, Tinker confirmed something that we’d all been hoping to hear.

“Are we going to see power laces in 2015? To that, I say yes.”

Lets just hope that this time the Nike MAG is a general release and the cost is a little less than the US$10-90k per pair that the 2011 model generated on eBay.
