A man from Maryborough, Queensland has been remanded and then released after four months in prison, when police mistook the epsom salt found in his car for crystal methamphetamine. That’s right, it took the police four months to determine that regular salt found in his car was not in fact ‘meth’.

Why the police took so long in order to complete what Border Security does in about 30 seconds has us all, including Maryborough justice John Smith, fucking perplexed. Smith slammed the QLD Police, and the government as a whole for the lengthy processes: “For the last 14 years nothing has been done (about the delays)… once again the government needs to have a look at what they are doing in relation to this”.

The accused’s lawyer put the ‘delays’ down to his clients previous criminal history, with the police not motivated to speed up the investigation process. We can all take something from this, and should probably hold back on the salt when in rural Queensland.
