When it comes to spanking the monkey, guys seem to have a lot more terms to express the act that they so lovingly undergo every night. Wanking, jerking off, jacking it, tossing, fapping, and so on and so forth. You get the idea. Women, on the other hand, have no such luxury. Whenever I want to talk to my friends about beating the meat, it turns into a ridiculous mission of trying to find a word that isn’t too scientifically correct (nothing kills the vibe like saying “masturbate”, this isn’t sex ed), and finding a word that isn’t too much of a joke (saucing the taco is no laughing matter).

The Swedish Association for Sexuality Education (RFSU) launched a competition earlier this month to find a new word for female masturbation. Kristina Ljungros, a spokeswoman for RFSU argues that “when it comes to masturbation, people mostly think about just men doing it and we don’t think of it as common for women. If we don’t have a word in the language, how can we even talk about it?”

RFSU sifted through thousands of entries and finally came to a shortlist of 34 words, of which include, “klittra”, “pulla” and “selfa”. I’m not Swedish, so I don’t know how it translates to English, but it sure as hell sounds a lot prettier than “flickin’ the bean”. The RFSU committee will vote in June 2015.
