Australia has been jet-lagging behind the rest of the world for quite some time now when it comes to in-flight internet access – so long, in fact, that our country’s greatest fear associated with flying is no longer the heights or the crying babies, but the inability to check how many likes our airport check-in racked up in the 90 minutes it takes to get from Melbourne to Sydney. (Real talk: let’s stop doing that.)

Apparently Telstra have been listening to our cries of first-world pain, with the news they’re currently testing out a new 4G network that will grant Instagram internet access on domestic flights. The service goes by the terrifyingly Terminator-esque name ‘Skinet’, and works by broadcasting those delicious 4G signals from Telstra’s pre-existing towers in the direction of passing internet-starved aircraft.

As AFR report, Skinet is still around two years away from becoming a reality, but it’s looking pretty promising. The service has already touched down two successful trial-runs on private flights between Melbourne and Sydney where it recorded broadband speeds of 15Mbps down, which is a lot faster than the stone-age shit that exists now. However, there’s still no word on how much it’ll co$t.

In the meantime, the sky is still the limit.
