Don’t be fooled, Donkey Kong is not merely childsplay. The old-school arcade version of Donkey Kong remains one of the most difficult games to play and top score status is still battled over by (ageing) gamers everywhere. If you’re familiar with the indie film King of Kong: Fistful of Quarters, you’ll know just how serious these competitions can get.

Most recently, not one but two gamers managed to beat the world record score, managing to be the first in the world to top 1.1 million points on the game. Competing in the Donkey Kong Online Open, gamer Wes Copeland registered a score of 1,170,500, holding top spot for a meagre six hours before reigning champ Robbie Lakeman scored a (yet to be verified) world record of 1,172,100. And if that isn’t dramatic enough for you, the pair could face-off IRL at gaming authority Twin Galaxies’ Entertainment Festival next month.
