You may have seen some billboards for the new Kirin Cider popping up around the place with an artfully scripted suburb listed. Why, I saw one in Abbotsford just the other day. This isn’t the work of creative suite but rather they’ve been hand painted by Gemma O’Brien, a Sydney-based designer who specializes in hand-rendered type. This is a fact I did not realise until I watched the above video.

Kirin Cider engaged Gemma to hand paint bespoke advertising displays at numerous locations in urban areas around Australia, from Fitzroy, VIC to Redfern, NSW. The majority of 3m x 4.5m signs were painted in Gemma’s studio, but on November 18, Gemma painted the signage for the Surry Hills location in situ, on the corner of Crown and Foveaux Street. See a gallery of images above and watch the video at the end, where Gemma talks about her influences and craft.
