In 1952, Riverside Hospital, located on North Brother Island in the Easter River between Queens and the Bronx, established Special School #619 – an institution for rehabilitating drug-addicted teens. After being abandoned and deemed ineffective in 1963, photographs from Special School #619 have been released showing patients involved in rehab activities such as pottery and dealing with going ‘cold turkey’.
