Rolling Stone recently chronicled the growth of Def Jam Recordings in the short documentary, “Rick Was Here”. The film shows the 1983 dorm room inception of the iconic hip hop label responsible for launching the careers of the Beastie Boys, LL Cool Jay, T La Rock, Jazzy Jay and many more.

In the documentary, Rubin revisits his dorm room in NYU’s Weinstein Hall and reflects on Def Jam’s very basic beginnings. He explains that knowledge of starting/running a record label had nothing to do with his career, “Nothing that happened was intentional – nothing. Everything was… trying to make something cool for our friends… that they would like.”
