The concept of DIY weaponry has taken on a whole new meaning now that 3D printing has become so widely utilised. Just like a manifestation of every anti-gun lobbyist’s worst nightmare, the technology and materials needed to 3D print an actual, metal, working firearm now exist.

When the designs for the first 3D-printed gun ‘The Liberator’ were released last year, people were sent into an absolute frenzy. The only factor that remained as some kind of consolation was that metal is an extremely difficult material to print with, and metal was needed for the main organ of the firearm, the firing pin.

So that’s where Solid Concepts steps in. A company that has now created a 3D-printed gun made entirely of metal…oh and it works. The firearm is capable of firing multiple rounds, unlike the original plans for ‘The Liberator’ which would have seen its abilities limited to just one shot, making this new model seem a little too real.

Phillip Conner, the DMLS Manager of Solid Concepts defends their production by saying their aim wasn’t to try and find a “cheaper, easier, better way to make a gun –that wasn’t the point at all”, instead it aims to put all the rumours that DMLS productions are flimsy to bed and showcase the abilities of the technology. As much of a reality check as this may be, it doesn’t necessarily mean that every basement will now become a fully-fledged firearm manufacturing ring, because let’s face it – how many people have access to the pricey equipment or the specific set of skills required to use it. Nevertheless, this does pose a question as to what the future of DIY weaponry will bring.
