I think Japan takes the cake (or hamburger, in this case) as the world’s most bizarre place. Yeah – that includes you too, North Korea. A quick Google search for “weird Japanese inventions” brings up a bunch of lists of bizarre things you can buy in Japan (though some of this stuff is actually kinda awesome – I’m looking at you, “hug-pillow for lonely women”), not to mention all the weird Japanese game shows, weird Japanese food, and weird Japanese food-themed bands… like The West Japan Hamburgirl Z.

According to the band’s manager, Shintaro Yabu (who is also the West Japan Hamburger Association’s chairman), the band started as a way to promote hamburgers on Awajishima Island, but have evolved to become a general burger themed 15-piece girl band. Naturally.

The 15 members each represent a different ingredient as chosen by Yabu, who commented “it’s all based on my first impression. I decided which ingredient each member would take command of based on how I felt when I first saw them.” The 15 ingredients are as follows: beef, lettuce, egg, tomato, Awajishima fish, Awajishima chicken, Awajishima W Onion (right), Awajishima W Onion (left), pork/bacon, pickles, avocado, pineapple, mushroom, green pepper and eggplant.

The group are also considered an “idol group”, meaning that they are marketed not only for their music (and hamburgery-ness), but also on their cuteness, their personality and their ability to be considered as ~role models for young people~. “When I grow up, I wanna be a hamburger…”

I love burgers and I definitely want to be in on this. But they got it all wrong, two onions and no bun? Enter me… the bun. Brioche bun, seeded bun, rustic bun, donut bun, whatever bun. But they need a bun. And definitely need to drop the eggplant.
