PBDY keeps busy running his label TAR, and most recently has been compiling his three-part audiovisual mixtape series, Microscopic Moods. The third volume and conclusion of the Microscopic Moods saga features visuals by Joshua Studham. We’re beyond hyped to premiere the video, which you can watch below.

Who are you?
I am Paul Preston but I go by PBDY.
Where are you from?
Born and raised in Long Island, then to the desert called Phoenix and now I’m in Los Angeles.
What is unique about your local music scene?
Shit, what isn’t unique about the music scene in LA? You can have anything here.
Describe your sound in three words. Go!
Bizarre, widespread, heavy.
What makes you unique as an artist?
I’d say just trying to do shit that no one else is doing. I like to take people on trips and sometimes that means taking risks.
Have you heard any new music lately? Got any recommendations?
It’s a crazy time for music right now. New stuff like Morgan Delt, Sidewalk Kal, Promnite, Lord Raja, new Taylor McFerrin, MatthewDavid and Jeremiah Jae all amazing too. I could go on.
Tell us a little about this release.
This release is the third instalment of an audio/visual series I’ve been working on called Microscopic Moods. I’ve been teaming up with different visual artists and having them interpret the sounds into visuals to accompany the mix.
What inspired the artwork for this track?
The artwork is super simple, it’s a piece of celery under a microscope. But I tweaked it a bit. It’s in the same vein as the past two covers. (The first being a rock on Mars and the second a piece of passionfruit, both under microscopes.) The premise of the title and artwork is basically just taking all these tiny emotions we have daily and putting them together piece by piece into something whole.
Is there a video component? What’s the story behind the video?
The visual component is crucial to this project. Josh Studham did the visuals – he is a visual artist from Ontario. I randomly stumbled upon his work on Vimeo one late night and hit him up to do the visuals to one of these mixes. I pretty much let the artist do their thing with the visuals and give them total freedom to do what they envision the sounds to be in their own style. As Josh said to me earlier online, “I’m interested in presenting images as something already consumed. Like how when you’re a kid, you chew your food and open your mouth and show it too your friend. Media regurgitation.”
What else are you working on at the moment?
Lots coming up. A collaboration with Jeremiah Jae, called JP Moregun, will drop this year. I’m planning on releasing some of my own production work as well as some other side projects. Been focusing on DJing for all these years so it’s time to give a little more towards production soon. But lots of mixes to come as well.
Do you have any shows coming up?
I’m flying to Japan with Brainfeeder on Wednesday to play the Brainfeeder4 Tokyo show at ageHa May 23rd. I’m tripping the fuck out.
