Meet Sensei Setsa (just Sensei for short) the Tennessee rapper whose flow is centred around Japanese metaphors. It’s more Geisha than Hello Kitty though – I don’t think you could get any further from kawaii than Sensei’s Return to the Village 1998, TBH. The 14-track album was released recently on Mishka Records, leading with the track ‘Kimono’ which you can listen to below.

EAVESDROPPING ON SENSEI

Who are you?

Setsa Sensei aka Origami Setsa.

Where are you from?

I’m from Dyersburg Tennessee. I really dislike that my mom moved from Ohio and raised me here.

Describe your sound in three words. Go!

Creative, artistic and experimental.

What makes you unique as an artist?

I’m very serious about what I do with music, to a point where I get no sleep over it, or I don’t think about eating or sometimes I forget I’m actually alive. I want to make it creative through videos and albums. Regardless if it’s about money, jewellery, women, the latest fashion, love, hate, Japan, Paris, Rome, ignorance – I don’t care what. I feel like I can get on Kanye’s level. That’s what makes me unique.

Tell us a little about this release.

It has many inspirations. Some tracks are senseless dark. I guess I tried to step into the past of me being a kid admiring PlayStation, Asian culture, beautiful women, fashion, money, anime and being disappointed about growing up with no father.

What else are you working on at the moment?

I have a project with my group Village Klick. I haven’t decided how we gonna approach it, but it’s gonna be hella sick.

Do you have any shows coming up?

Nah. This is all a first step for me but I cant wait to experience my first show.
