Tomderson is a favourite on the Melbourne scene, regularly supporting top-tier touring artists at the clubs (cue humblebrag namedrop of Disclosure, Flosstradamus, Clockwork, RL Grime, Douster, Astronomar, Dirty South Joe, Paul Devro, etcetera) and playing ACCLAIM-approved events like the adidas ZX Flux launch and New Era Cap x Mad Decent party during CARBON festival. Tomderson has been big-upped by a bunch of musical comrades, like Future Classic supergroup What So Not:

“Tom usually creeps me out, but he’s a good DJ”.
—Flume

“Tom is a good DJ, but that’s all he has going for him.”
—Emoh Instead

You can also quote me on this one:

“Tomderson is a good DJ. He has a kind face.”
—Mia Besorio

And there you have it kids. Tomderson is a good DJ. He is also a good producer and just released a Jersey Club Remix Pack for free. Cop that shit below, and check out Q&A session with the beatsmith below.

EAVESDROPPING ON TOMDERSON

Where are you from?

Melbourne, Australia. In a small country town called Hurstbridge.

Describe your sound in 3 words. Go!

808, beat, drop.

What is unique about your local music scene?

I have so many close producer friends in Melbourne who are making all kinds of electronic music. It’s great how we can bounce different shit off each other and kinda get new ideas and inspiration for our own music. I think a lot of us are more open to different music now than we were a few years ago.

What makes you unique as an artist?

What I’m doing and where I’m doing it. I definitely go for the more ‘international’ sound and it is kinda hard trying to put that stuff out when you’re constantly surrounded by people who want more commercial styles (like Melbourne bounce, big room).

Have you heard any new music lately? Got any recommendations?

International artists people should be checking out now: Elliphant, Ape Drums, Onderkoffer, Tincup and Gianni Marino.

The local bros who are on fire: SWISHER, Swick, Lewis Cancut, Liddicat, Kutaap, Dugong Jr & DEER.

Tell us a little about this release.

Basically I just really wanted to make some B-more / Jersey club influenced tunes and was finding it hard to do originals because of the constant sampling. So I threw these classics into it and it worked nicely for a couple of remixes. Been going off at the club!

What inspired the artwork for this track?

I asked my pal DEER for some help on this one. Pretty basic inspiration really. He put together an image of Ciara and an image of MJ, coloured the background and we rolled with it. Thanks though DEER – you’re a champ.

What else are you working on at the moment?

I got a new single ‘Congo Drum’ coming out very soon on Scattermusic (featuring remixes from DJ Melo and Matt Sofo), two of my own remixes for Butterbox and Diamond Lights to come out on Vicious Bitch and Yes Yes Records and a bunch of collabs with DEER, Wednesday The Rat and hopefully others too!

Do you have any shows coming up?

For now, I have a headline gig at the Mercat Basement (Melbourne) on May 24 for the ‘Re-Up’ plus a few interstate shows on the horizon! Exciting times.
