Collaborations are a major part of hip-hop and there’s no better feeling than hearing two of your favourite artists coming together on the same track. What’s even more exciting is when said artists record a full-length album together. I’m talking Kanye West and Jay Z’s Watch The Throne or Future and Drake’s What A Time To Be Alive. With two of my current favourites Big Sean and Jhene Aiko recently dropping their concept album, TWENTY88, I thought I’d discuss five collaborations I hope happen, although I’m not holding my breath.

01. Ghostface Killah & MF DOOM

I’m not the only fan waiting for this one. All hip-hop marks have be wanting the rumours of a Ghostface Killah and DOOM album to come true since surfacing over a decade ago. Ever since Ghostface jumped on 2005’s ‘The Mask’, the highlight of Danger Mouse and MF DOOM’s joint album, fans have been clamouring for an album between the two. In the interim, Ghost and DOOM have teamed up infrequently, with last year’s ‘Lively Hood’, released under the moniker DOOMSTARKS, giving more hope an album might be forthcoming. Ghost’s skillful rhymes and DOOM’s raw flow and abstract production would lay the foundation for an album I envision steeped in comic book superheroes and gangster tales set in their native New York.

02. Chance The Rapper & Vic Mensa

While most Chance The Rapper fans are still waiting for him and Childish Gambino to get in the studio for their rumoured joint EP, I’m hoping he hooks up with fellow Chi-town native Vic Mensa. Similar to Bronson and Raff, these two have contrasting styles and approaches to hip-hop, but just click when on wax together. Chance is the stoner kid with positive vibes while Vic brings the edge, with socially aware raps. With both having connections to Kanye West and the G.O.O.D. Music stable, the production would be tight on an album representing the city of Chicago and its unique experiences.

03. Rick Ross & John Legend

John Legend is the go-to guy in hip-hop when in need of a soulful hook, and no rapper has benefited more from his talent than Rick Ross. Not that Ross needs help peddling the image that he’s a drug dealer living the high life, but every time he and Legend hop on the same beat the results are magic. Rozay’s gruff and braggadocio raps intertwine seamlessly with Legend’s soulful baritone on the likes of ‘Magnificent’, ‘Rich Forever’, and Legend’s own ‘Who Do You Think We Are’, so an album between the two would be the ultimate. Of course, there’s always the chance it might end up like Jay Z and R. Kelly’s horrible The Best Of Both Worlds (or worse, the sequel Unfinished Business) but I have faith Ross and Legend can craft an album playing to both their strengths.

04. Action Bronson & Riff Raff

Ever since Riff Raff claimed he and Action Bronson were working on a collaborative effort back in 2012, I’ve been secretly hoping this one comes to fruition. Entitled Galaxy Guardians, Raff didn’t give any more information about the album, although I like to imagine a concept album about two stoner spacemen travelling the universe in search of the ultimate high while getting into adventures along the way. Anyway… if you’ve heard Bronson and Raff’s classic single, ‘Bird On A Wire’, you’d agree the two have a chemistry that’s almost unmatched in hip-hop circles. On the track Bronson takes the lead with his ever-smooth flow, dropping bars packed with over-the-top lyrics and culinary references, while Raff delivers nonsensical rhymes at a rapid rate, with Harry Fraud’s dope production the lynchpin. Since then, the duo have collaborated on two other tracks, but the likelihood of Galaxy Guardians happening is fading with each year that passes. Bronson is now a bonafide rap star, having released his debut album Mr. Wonderful last year and become host of his own foodie program, while Raff continues his musical endeavours while also diversifying his interests, having just signed a reported $4 million deal with Stampede Management and BMG. I can always dream right?

05. Dr. Dre, The Game, & Kendrick Lamar

The Game is one of my favourite rappers. His work with Dr. Dre helped put the West Coast back on the map while his two collaborations with Kendrick Lamar are excellent showcases of both rappers’ lyrical dexterity. We all know what Dre and Lamar conjured with Good Kid M.A.A.D. City, so getting the three on an album together makes total sense. I envision this as the definitive West Coast hip-hop album that’s both a tribute and reflection of Los Angeles. Dre would handle production duties and the occasional verse, Game and Lamar’s introspective tales of life in the city of angels would provide the albums lyrical themes, and cameos from legends like Ice Cube and Snoop Dogg would help solidify the albums authenticity. Let’s be honest, who doesn’t want to hear three of the West’s best record an entire album?
