The artist formerly known as Twigs AKA Tahliah Barnett AKA FKA twigs is looking down the barrel of another legal battle with Chicago sisters Laura and Linda Good, who perform under the name The Twigs. The duo slapped the UK singer with a lawsuit while she was still performing under the name Twigs. She reportedly offered the sisters $15,000 for the name, which they refused. And so, FKA twigs was born.

Unfortunately, this wasn’t acceptable, so the Good sisters came running back with a restraining order to prevent Barnett from using the name. The label fought back, telling the judge, “Bands have routinely used derivative names in order to avoid consumer confusion … Dinosaur became Dinosaur Jr., Blink became Blink-182, Suede became the London Suede, and the Charlatans became the Charlatans U.K. Here, FKA twigs is clearly and easily distinguishable from The Twigs.” The restraining order was denied.

The sisters have still retained their right to sue in the future, and twigs will have to enter a “personal use agreement” in order to use the name, which means she may have to pay in excess of $15,000 to use the name.

“The only way I won’t have to change my name is if they say that I don’t have to. And they’re not gonna say that,” she said. “It’ll be fine. I might call myself FKA tree trunk. Or FKA baby branches. Or IRL twigs.”
