So we’re still waiting on the official release of Kanye West’s new album, though I’m sure many of us were privy to the leak that dropped over the weekend. Even those who have only heard the Kanye-approved previews would have noticed the more aggressive, rock/electronic-inflected sounds that feature in his new works. And now we get a little more insight as to why.

Referred to, by Yeezus himself, as “the god”, everyone’s producer-of-choice Rick Rubin jumped on the project in the later stages but was involved enough to be given the title of Executive Producer when the record was finally finished. I guess that would also explain why he has ‘God’ featuring on the track “I Am God”. I see what you did there Yeezy.

In this short chat to The Wall Street Journal, Rubin reveals his role in the “Yeezus” sound, as well as his thoughts on Kanye West as an artist.

“Kanye came over to play me what I assumed was going to be the finished album at three weeks before the last possible delivery date…I joined the project because after discussing what he had played for me, he asked if I would be open to taking all of the raw material on and help him finish it.”
