In HANDFUL we showcase up-and-coming artists and the tracks that have inspired their own music. Elroy 4.0 is also known as Ross Bird, and is soon-to-be-based in the lovely Byron Bay to concentrate on his music. A member of Brisbane’s Ender Records, Bright Future and White Rhino collectives, his tracks have topped the Triple J Unearthed electronic music charts, as well as getting some well-deserved radio play at FBI Radio. His latest tracks, the dreamy Not Too Distant and the drifting The Lighthouse are playable below and you can use the scrolling above to listen to each track Ross has selected.

Lazy Grey – Have a beer (Karsniogenics 2000)
“My passion for producing began when I starting messing around with hip-hop Ejay when I was 15. I would sample artists such as Lazy Grey & Brad Strut and my friends and I would have a few beers and record verses. Lazy is still my favourite MC.”

The Chemical Brothers – Star Guitar (Freestyle Dust 2002)
“After seeing The Chemical Brothers play at the Boiler Room (Big Day Out) with my bro (Lone Pariah), I became obsessed with electronic music and started using Reason, which is a great platform to use when experimenting with virtual synths.”

Ben Benjamin – Hypertaxin (Ghostly International 2007)

“Ben Benjamin’s album The Many Moods of Ben Benjamin Vol 1 definitely had an influence on my music. I remember listening to it and thinking ‘I want to be able to make music like this one day’. I made the transition to Ableton and have never looked back.”

Rustie – Zig Zag (Wireblock 2008)
“My brother, Simon, introduced me to the LuckyMe collective when he returned from London in 2008. I was stoked to hear the fusion of electronic music and hip-hop and began producing future beats.”

Mike Slott – 40 Winx (LuckyMe 2009)
“I love this track. It has been the alarm on my phone for two years. I never get sick of it because it has so many layers. Shutter Vision…”
