D’Angelo has paid homage to Prince in one of the most tear-jerking renditions of ‘Sometimes It Snows in April’, the 1986 ballad from Prince’s Under the Cherry Moon. Performing at The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, D’Angelo, under a purple light, begun: “just after I’d wiped away his last tear / I guess he’s better off than he was before.” The emotion is palpable. At one point, he changes the lyrics to “I often dream of heaven / I know that Prince is there,” before stumbling. Performing alongside Maya Rudolph and Gretchen Lieberum, collectively known as Princess, the trio create an almost-nostalgic vibe; a beautiful sombreness.

The lyrics have greater poignancy this time; the meaning is felt. “All good things, they say, never last,” croons D’Angelo. “And love isn’t love until it’s past.” Questlove, drummer of The Roots, tweeted his support for the tribute.

Make sure you have your tissues ready. Check out the beautiful rendition of Prince’s legacy above.
