Makonnen has finished up the latest instalment in his ongoing Drink More Water mixtape series and it is now available for stream (no pun intended). With appearances from Migos, Rich Da Kid, Rome Fortune, Fredo Santana and Young Gleesh, it’s a rising star-studded affair and a good demonstration of what the New ATL has to offer. The omnipresent Gucci Mane also makes an appearance – it’s surprising he had the time, since it seems like he’s made about five mixtapes a day recently. As expected, the sounds range widely – quickly switching from ethereal outer-space weirdo beats to the booming 808s and rapid-fire percussion we’ve expected from his bigger tracks.

Altogether the song-writing on the project sounds remarkably more focused and calculated than the majority of his releases so far, which is a step in the right direction for an artist that has often been described by his critics as inconsistent. But I guess that’s what happens when the OVO machine is truly behind you. It’s also only appropriate he chose a Tuesday (at least in the U.S.) to get the club going up again – guess we’ll just have to settle for a Wednesday down here. Hump day turn-ups – it’s a thing now.
