Premiere: Silentjay drops a fantastically simple video for “The Glyde”

The Melbourne up-and-comer is back with a new beat tape and a launch party just around the corner

There’s never been a more exciting time than right now to be following Melbourne’s unstoppable hip-hop scene. For those who aren’t familiar, Silentjay is a Melbourne-based multi-instrumentalist who works in the field of instrumental hip-hop, mixing jams like a pro.

His latest drop, ‘The Glyde’ is a hat-tip to the seminal beat tape and beat box culture of the ’90s. The track also features hints of Jay flirting with dub and jazz influences to create something he calls “illegal after-prom party” music.

Jay has also dropped a fantastic accompanying music video, which we’re psyched to give you the first look of today. The video is self-directed and features filming by Rhys Newling, as well as Nish Mathur ‘on the dance’.

‘The Glyde’ represents Jay getting back to his instrumental and experimental roots after his debut record, Sacrifice won him widespread acclaim, including kudos from influential producer Flying Lotus.

Following an on-stage debut in support of Thundercat, Silentjay and his live band will be throwing a beat-tape launch party “Come Fly With Me” at Howler on Thursday September 27. The set will showcase Jay’s latest releases as well as old favourites. The night will also include guest appearances from the likes of Nap King Cole, Man Made Mountain, and Baz Richie.

Tickets are limited, so make sure you cop one and gear up for a superb evening of beat-heavy, nostalgia-driven instrumental madness. Grab yours here here.

Jay’s new beat tape Come Fly With Me is out September 14.
