Weekly updates

After earning the name ‘Lefto’ (a French term for ‘early bird’) in his graffiti days, the Belgium-based DJ, producer and tastemaker turned his curiosity to music. At this point he’s pretty much done it all, from selecting tracks for Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings, hosting his own show on Studio Brussel, to DJing across the world.

Ahead of his Australian tour, Lefto selects an exclusive mix that’s a re-imagined soundtrack to Melbourne’s City Loop that you can find right here… we’re thinking Metlink should catch onto this one.

Featuring an diverse line-up, from TNGHT’s huge track Goooo to NZ-based producer Christoph El Truento’s blissed-out Fish Step, alongside cuts from Flying Lotus and Gaslamp killer. This mix is curated with the creative passion of a DJ that knows his music like most know their Gmail password.

Lefto is currently touring Australia. You can find more info here or read below for a full list of dates.

My name is…
Lefto, which is a French term to say ‘early bird’. That nickname was given to me in my graffiti time.

I live in…
Brussels, the capital of this country called Belgium known for its chocolate, beer, waffles and fries I guess. It is also the home of the European Union and the headquarters of NATO.

My mixtape is called…
City Loop Mix. It’s probably an obvious name but less obvious than Down Under, right?

Some of the things that inspired it are…
The fact I like to use urban terms and I think it’s appropriate for Melbourne. It’s the heartbeat of the city, or at least that’s how I felt it and therefore I used that name.

Its cover art looks like…
Well, if you guys could use the City Loop transport map as a background that would be cool. [Sorry Lefto!—ACCLAIM]

My favourite track is…
If you mean on this mixtape, probably TNGHT’s Goooo. The killer duo is just the best thing in 2012. But my all-time favourite track is probably too much to ask – it’s too hard.

The person I can imagine listening to it is…
Anybody dedicated to music in general. Someone who feels music, who listens to music to feel better after a stressful day.

My favourite mixtape would include…
A lot of unheard tracks I like. I hear my favourite tracks a lot, so tracks that would surprise me or guide me to a new artist I’ve never heard of, a style of music I never discovered. Something like that, yeah.

When I’m not making music I…
I am looking for new music, new artists to support. If I love what the artist does, they will get my full support. I don’t want to promote a track or music I don’t feel just because it’s hip.

The last thing I downloaded was…
The new Letherette on Ninja Tune, which features a great Dorian Concept remix – the young genius from Vienna and good buddy of mine is simply one of my favourite producers.

The next project I’m working on is…
I’m actually working on my Paris residency line-up for May right now. I am also trying to finish tracks to finally be able to drop a record.  I would love to drop it as a series of 7″ records.
