Back in March Danny Brown spent over an hour talking with British journalist Hattie Collins for Red Bull Music Academy. In the recorded interview he talks about a huge number of topics; how he came into rapping, growing up in Detroit, weed as a performance enhancing drug and the internet’s relationship with the rap scene.

In the interview, Brown explains that he has always been interested in music. As a child he used to rap and in elementary school, he joined the band and played trumpet.  He says that playing trumpet taught him the style of rap he performs today.

When asked by Collins about his childhood, he explains that his mother read Dr Seuss books to him so when he began to speak, he spoke in rhymes.

In a follow up interview with Dazed Digital, Danny said that he is heavily influenced by Dr Seuss and that he would one day like to write a kid’s book.

“Because I talk so much about getting my dick sucked, and so much misogyny, I gotta right all my wrongs! I have a daughter. You can’t have all negative, you gotta have some positive to it. So if I make these rap songs about all this misogyny, I need to write books.” he said.

This was all during the same event that saw Danny storm off stage after getting hit with a drink. See more about that here.
