Many aspiring rappers have spent hours in deep meditation pondering the universal question: “Why don’t I have a hit?” Eventually most will give up searching for answers and resort to spamming their mundane-opus on unsuspecting Twitter users. Brooklyn’s Ronny Godz, however, seems to have found the answer with the first single off his upcoming mixtape 9music.
‘Are You Dumb’ is a straight slapper. It’s puff. It’s fire. It has it all: a dank Chicago drill beat, silky-smooth auto-tune rap verse, lyrics that will bounce around your head for days, and the catchiest rap hook I’ve heard in years. Seriously, if Rihanna recorded this same song there’s no doubt it would be an international hit.
Frustratingly enough though, for some, recording a hit song still isn’t enough. A month after being uploaded, ‘Are You Dumb’ only has 40,000 views (a few hundred are mine) on YouTube and sits on the verge of being lost forever in a sea of almost-hits.
