Seminal grime artist Skepta and up-and-comers Novelist and The Square were interviewed by filmmaker Grace Ladoja on their thoughts about the relationship between the iconic Nike Air Maxes and the genre that the two have broken ground in. In the video, the links are made clear between the raw, street sound of grime and how fashion became reflective of the culture. Considering the genre is beginning to rise to prominence, a great point is made about the difference between it and rap – that it’s not out to be flashy, but more about doing your own thing. Similarly, in disparity to the way kicks are worn now, it’s clear functionality was a key to their success in the UK – wearing Nike on the street ensured agility, and the ability to simply “be youth”.
