From the moment you first hear the masked (or scarfed) man utter the phrase “I don’t hate people, I just feel better when they’re not around”, you get the distinct sense you’re hearing the sentiments of Daniel Dumile spoken through the mouth of mumblecore candidate Yasiin Bey. The face accoutrements don’t do much to dispel that suspicion once the figure starts rapping some of MF DOOM’s most vicious bars in the wide-voweled patois of main man Mos.

I can’t be the only person who sees Yasiin Bey gesticulating through a polarised camera filter and immediately thinks of the scene in Be Kind Rewind where he and Jack Black flick their camcorder onto the negative mode to make it look like night time during their Ghostbusters recreation. Or maybe I am because Mos Def was one of the first rappers who got me hooked on hip-hop and I voraciously consumed everything he did for the greater part of my adolescence. Either way, I was psyched to stumble across this collection of YouTube clips.

The project is a little odd to say the least but undeniably entertaining. It’s been unraveling over the last few months thanks to French online video media group Culturebox and culminates in the seventh video with Yasiin finally unmasking himself. He drops DOOM favourites such as ‘Beef Rap’, ‘All Caps’, ‘Accordion’ and more. We’ve assembled the lot in the gallery above so check them out and let us know what you think; wack or wonderful?
