Photoessay: Los Angeles Wetropolis

Photographing light and water under Los Angeles night

Posted by

Los Angeles (and California as a whole) is currently experiencing one of the worst droughts on record. A combination of water saving measures and LA heat means that by day the city is dry and harsh. It’s only when the sun sets that the city gets a reprieve and water suddenly has a chance. The contrast between dry days and wet nights in LA is at the centre of this photoessay by LA-based Australian photographer Jack Shelton. With neon light bouncing off water drops on carhoods the series takes cues from film noir as it finds the opportunities that arise from the combination of water, light, and night.

This series was created in partnership with Converse to celebrate the launch of their Counter Climate Range. ACCLAIM commissioned three photographers to create essays around the theme ‘Wetropolis: a world that’s damp, intriguing, and beautiful. In this world the wet isn’t a negative—rather it’s a positive’. The Converse Counter range is available online now.
