Christian Kimber launches flagship store in Melbourne

The premium menswear label finds a new home

Words by

Christian Kimber has a very keen eye. After migrating to Australia, he spotted many “young chaps developing a keen interest in clothing,” but a gap in the market where brands were not delivering A-grade footwear to our doorsteps. A little while back we came to you with the lookbook for Kimber’s second collection of luxury shoes. This was, of course, not the first time we’d heard of the British-born designer, having gotten around several of his pop-up shops in the past. But the days of pop-ups are to remain in the archives as Kimber takes the bold step into his first very own store.

Designed by Kimber himself, the store features items hand picked to create a space that reflects the creative hub of Melbourne it sits in. With stockists all over the world, from Bloomingdale’s in the US, Selfridges in the UK to Japan’s Adam De Rope, it’s pretty special that Melbourne will be home to the label’s flagship store. The store is very much a reflection of the passion Kimber has for the culture shift he is working at creating. Where menswear stores in Melbourne tend to carry a very serious vibe, the chilled-out atmosphere showcases his mantra that it’s about to quality of the product above everything else.

Kimber describes his new store as eccentric, considering it is filled with things he has “collected over time on my journey, and reflects a lot of different styles in terms of decor”.

“In many ways that’s a lot like my designs. I try to bring together the best of all the new ideas I’m exposed to on my travels.”

Indeed, the intimate feel of the store offers a more-than-welcoming shopping experience, where customers can experience an insight into his world. It’s got that feeling of visiting a well-travelled friend’s apartment, where every piece you see makes you want to ask for the story behind it. The walls are adorned with his line of silk pocket squares that sport different global icons which are, like all of his products, handmade in Como, Italy.

Having only cracked the shoe business three years ago, his quick rise proves that Kimber is no stranger to the grind. Drilling through  business school during the day and London Fashion School at night, the work that this young designer has been putting in is clearly paying off in the realisation of a product that celebrates a happy marriage between top quality and unquestionable streetwear steeze.

Christian will be celebrating the launch of his retail space on Thursday August 26 from 6pm. You can find the full event and RSVP details here.
