If you’re from Australia and you care even slightly about what you wrap around your feet and you haven’t heard of Christian Kimber, you ought to be ashamed of yourself. If you’re from the rest of the world, now is the time to get acquainted. The former resident of London has set up shop in Melbourne, establishing Christian Kimber Fine Footwear – an independent retailer of hand made shoes. With an emphasis on quality of construction, and a keen sense of tradition, Kimber creates modern re-interpretations of classic silhouettes.

Last Friday evening saw a cavalcade of Melbourne’s #menswear illumanati gather in a fittingly glamorous location on Collins Street to celebrate the launch of Kimber’s second collection. An evening of good champagne, great clothing, and the refreshingly Jay Z–centric backing playlist made for the ideal environment to take in the latest body of product. Inspired by the East India Trade Company and the mythic romance of the travelling salesman, the collection of hand made tassel loafers, desert boots, and penny loafers are a testament to European tradition re-envisioned for the Australian climate. The result is a product that’s somehow both rooted in timeless ideals of dress, but also very much of the contemporary cultural climate. It’s a paradox, but one that Kimber seems to navigate effortlessly.
