Ruler Wurc x Nasty Mars: Wake Up

The Melbourne label and MC link up for the most aesthetic wake up call ever

Posted by

As an independent collective, the family at Ruler Wurc are constantly producing pieces that match quality with steeze, and their latest drop doesn’t shy away from the facts.

As kings of the long-sleeve, their ‘Wake Up’ tee works as an alarm bell for anyone sleeping on the scene in America. It’s one thing to recognise that the political landscape in the US is pretty chaotic, from gun laws to racial violence and police brutality. Yet it’s another to acknowledge that there’s plenty of problems in Australia too. Yep, there’s never been a more crucial time to stay woke so it’s appropriate that the one repping the threads is Melbourne-MC Nasty Mars.

Much like his extensive list of influences, the levels to his music are immense wherein much of the work Nasty Mars puts in will “never see the light of day.” He cites Stevie Wonder, D’Angelo, Badu, Lauryn Hill, Prince, Michael Jackson, Bob Marley, Andre 3000, Marvin Gaye, Tyler, Pharrell, Frank Ocean and Fela Kuti as creatives he aspires to be like and the music produced stands as a testimony to such an impressive taste palate. “Music for me, it’s like oxygen. Without it, I’ll cease to exist.”

This amount of grinding behind the scenes translates to captivating live performances that have audiences walking away in shock. The stage energy is like nothing else, and his A1 vibes have been well captured for the lookbook by photographer Wilhelm PhilippHaving snapped up some of our fav shots in the past, Will is back at it again with a mood board that has our Summer anticipation higher than ever.

No doubt there’s more than enough to look forward to. Sure, we got a pretty decent Nasty Mars fix after his verse on Baro’s single ‘wdubi’ and his recent visual feed with Mäysie, but there’s still heaps in the works. Nasty Mars assures us he’s got a “secret plan of attack,” but until it unfolds, you can catch him at Melbourne Music Week alongside Valve Sounds gem’s, UV Boi and Maya Hirasedo. And of course, you can shop the Ruler Wurc tees on their site after checking out the lookbook in the gallery above.
