When you think of fashion week, you probably think of New York, London, Paris or Milan. However, Silicon Valley has now thrown their chips on the table with a Fashion Week of their own which ran for three days in San Francisco. So less of a fashion week, more of a fashion long weekend.

The event definitely lived up to their insistence that it would be the ‘wackiest’ fashion show around. On some catwalks, traditional human models were replaced by drones parading clothing down the catwalk. Other items featured in the shows included fashionable safety wear for cyclists, a water bladder that also lights up in time to music, a hoodie with a light up strip, and the cringeworthy ‘disco tuxedo’.

Silicon Valley Fashion Week was the brainchild of Betabrand, a company that specialises in creating tech garments including tracksuit pants disguised as suit pants. They’re also responsible for the ‘disco tuxedo’ and the poop emoji shirt. I guess they’re balancing innovation with profitable gimmickry.

That said, tech garments are highly likely to become increasingly present in future fashion as the continual focus on performance sportswear as streetfashion ensures the importance of evolving materials and construction techniques. Putting aside the absurdity and dorkiness of the event, Silicon Valley Fashion Week was indicative of the culture that has been created around internet startups and technology companies, balancing technology and fashionability.
